Ready to stand on top of a dried-up Salt Lake? Or better yet, DRIVE on it?!
THere’s nothing quite like standing on top of sun-dried salty crystals.
Don’t visit if it’s recently rained. If you get stuck it’s a whopping $1500 to get towed out.
We pulled out just around the rest stop. You'll probably see multiple cars out there. If there aren't cars out on the Salt Flats already...you may just want to see why. Don’t visit if it’s recently rained. If you get stuck it’s a whopping $1500 to get towed out.
The day we visited happened to be extremely windy and actually kind of cold. Luckily, I always have a duffle bag full of warm clothes for everyone. (It's a bonus to having a huge adventure van to keep all the things in.)
We spent an hour or so letting the kids run wild through the flats. We also brought a remote control car (well my son did) and he drove it all over the flats.
I dared the kids to lick the salt...then I had to do it too. It was...salty.
If you visit during the day, there is absolutely no shade, so bring your own. Or visit during a sunset. Bring plenty of water.
Check out all the fun places to see along I-80! We wrote up an itinerary with some oddities that always make for an excellent stop.
