If you haven't heard of McConkie Ranch Petroglyphs, you are in for a real treat. There are LOTS of petroglyphs throughout Utah, but McConkie Ranch has some of the BEST.
Surrounded by a beautiful backdrop, this hidden gem is well worth traveling for.
McConkie Ranch is easily found with a phone GPS and there are plenty of road signs to follow.
There is a parking lot with some picnic tables and shade.
The little shed located in the parking lot is filled with post-it notes inscribed with upliftings words. There is an ancient fridge filled with cold drinks to purchase - it's on the honor system.
McConkie Ranch Petroglyphs are on private property and the owners allow visitors, so make sure to treat the area with respect.
McConkie Ranch is free but please donate generously if you can.
The short trail leading up the cliffs a moderate climb, but easy enough for most people.
The paths are well marked, but you will have to step over large boulders and branches in some places.
There are many petroglyphs along the first part of the hike. Be sure to respect and not touch them.
The views from above are beautiful.
All of the petroglyphs are marked with signs, so you can't miss them.
The short loop trail shows some good petroglyphs, but really, if you want to see the BEST petroglyphs in all of Utah, you need to do the rest of the trail that extends off to one side. See the map located in the shed.
The trail continues on along the side of the cliffs through some stunning areas.
The petroglyphs at the end are amazing. There are dozens of 4' tall petroglyphs. You will not believe the details on each of them. Someone must have spent years, years, creating each of these designs.
Each one is different and some have oversized heads, feet, necklaces, headdresses and there's even a presumed headhunter.
The size of these petroglyphs is amazing. Again, you do not want to skip out on the last part of this hike!
